Guest sentiment
A snapshot of what local diners frequently mention about this location.
"The owners (Mike & Crystal) are wonderful people. This was my first visit, and they welcomed us with friendly smiles and were so kind and easy to talk to. The best part was the food! If you’re looking for a new place to try, it’s worth stopping by."
"Our family of four went here tonight for the first time. I actually found Grumpy Grouper on Google Maps. So, first impressions - it’s a food truck on the side of Route 61 in Leesport; with no signage to identify its existence. We knew that going in and had no issues sitting at one of the covered tables to eat. The owners were very personable and attentive. The speed of service was similar to that of a traditional sit down seafood restaurant. As for the food, we ordered the gator po’ boy, the chicken fingers, and the weekly special Mahi Mahi. My wife enjoyed the large quantity of delicious chicken fingers and the over abundance of boardwalk/carnival style fries. My daughters ordered the Mahi Mahi and said the taste was very similar to what they’ve had in Florida restaurants; although it was a tad bit dry. They indicated the potatoes and mixed vegetables were delicious as well; and they didn’t even get to the decent sized side salad. I personally ordered the gator, which was piled high in the steak roll along with the massive quantity of fries. While the flavor of the sandwich with the sauce was tasty, the breading was a bit heavy and more crunchy than I prefer. The side of coleslaw however was spot on in my book - creamy, sweet, and tangy without being overly heavy. Our overall experiences and resulting opinions are that Grumpy Grouper is an almost hidden (in plain sight) gem offering better than expected seafood that is worth revisiting."
"I'm giving 5 stars across the board cause the people there are nice and the food exceeded my expectations. I ate here with my friend for lunch. Keep in mind you are on the highway so it is noisy, if that bothers you just get it to go. They do have a covered area you can sit under and other tables if the sun is out and you want to grab a bite here. I got a chicken sandwich (LTMO) which came on a brioche bun with fries and coleslaw. My friend got the clam strips. We were both happy with everything. Portions are great and quality is even better"
"Very friendly service! Definitely a nice refreshing menu for this area. Love the lobster rolls!"
"I stopped here on a Sunday in January while in the area. I was in Hamburg at a trail and looked for “restaurants” in the area on google maps. I checked the reviews on this and looked for a Facebook page to confirm hours since it looked like a roadside stand. I arrived and realized they are cash only so I had to go to an ATM but made it back before closing. I originally came here because I saw they had lobster rolls but they were sold out. I had seen in their Facebook that they had tostones so I asked for that and they mentioned the shrimp salad with tostones. I did drive this almost an hour home before eating it and it was still very good. The tostones were perfect and the shrimp salad was very flavorful. The menu looked good. They had a lot of seafood options including grouper. There are tables and chairs out in front but it was too cold for me to sit there comfortably to eat. In the warmer months this would be great. It is on a busy road though so if you take kids keep them away from the street. The gentleman taking orders and cooking - I am assuming he is the owner but I could be wrong - was personable and friendly. He makes everything fresh to order so if you are in a hurry I would call ahead. Definitely check their Facebook for specials too. Prices were good considering the menu items and portion size of my meal. Parking was a stone lot next to the little building. If you go during their open hours and it looks like no one is there, they are probably cooking something, knock or just wait. I enjoyed this meal and would stop again next time I’m in the area."
"Atmosphere lost a star only because of the road noise. I had such a great time! The staff and owners were over-the-top nice. We had grouper sandwich (tender and perfectly breaded) - Yum. Also in our group was the lobster roll. It was as good as we had at restaurants in Maine - Yum! The final dish was shrimp Po Boy. Perfectly breaded and extra large shrimp - Also yum! Honestly, we had such a great meal and great time that I'm sure we will make the hour and a half trip again.... Soon. I wish we would've taken pictures but the food and the fries were so good we forgot. My wife says it's not first date material because you end up with messy hands and face from devouring the food."
"I had a delicious lump crab sandwich and fries. It was delicious and economically priced but I think this place will remain a best kept secret due to the window appearing dark. I thought the place was shut until I knocked on the window."
"I had a wonderful experience with the owners at this location. Additionally the seafood was very good and I'd absolutely return here again. Recommended to order ahead and eat there! I think they serve items on a while supplies last basis for the day. Grouper sandwich was awesome. The fries were great and crispy. It was the best fried fish in Berks county. Lobster roll was delicious with tender buttery lobster. Jalapeno poppers were fresh, like home made. They are pet friendly (be respectful with your pets) and BYOB. If you driven past and wondered about this location....stop. it's worth it."
